Built in stone, it is a deceptively spacious property that has been designed in an open-plan style and overlooks the owner’s mature garden. The cottage has its own patio, offering ample opportunity for outdoor dining on a lazy summer’s evening, while oil-filled radiators make it a warm and cosy base in the chillier months.
The village of Sheriff Hutton possesses a unique character alongside a long history. It is situated on a long low east–west ridge between the Vale of York and the Howardian Hills. Castle ruins dramatically dominate the village and there is fine countryside never far away. Its use as a settlement can be dated back to around 6000BC. In addition, finds in the area and crop marks indicate settlement in Roman times. Sheriff Hutton has two castles; a Norman motte and bailey structure of which only the mounds remain and a second castle finished in 1398. Its ruins mark out Sheriff Hutton as a site of historical interest. Today, the village is served by two pubs, both offering excellent food and there are a number of attractions nearby such as Pickering Castle, the North Yorkshire Moors and the towns of Scarborough and Whitby.
