River Cottage is a single storey detached cottage set in the heart of the Galloway Forest Park within the beautiful and serene Glenkens which is a gloriously unspoiled area with a wide variety of amazing wildlife and spectacular landscape. From mountains and moorland, lochs and burns and rivers and ancient woodland and forests the area is often referred to as the Highlands of the Lowlands! River Cottage sits by the Polmaddy Burn where there are fishing rights. From the cottage there are numerous walks including Polmaddy, a classic Galloway village before the improvements and clearances of the 1700's and 1800's. This area truly offers something for everyone from the adrenalin seeker who will love mountain balling or World renowned mountain biking at the 7Stanes to those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of life and be at one with nature. The Galloway Forest Park covers 300 square miles; a vast and beautiful area criss-crossed by way-marked Forestry Commission trails and longer routes, such as the Southern Upland Way. Dumfries and Galloway has so many claims to fame from having the oldest post office in the world; the most southern distillery; the most southerly village; the highest village; the largest forest park; one of the oldest churches in Scotland and the best place to view the night sky in the UK. Highly recommended are two superb drives in the area. The Raider's Road which can also be walked or cycled is a seasonal ten mile long scenic forest drive through the Galloway Forest Park. It follows the old drovers road and there are information points and wonderful views of the surrounding hills. If you are lucky you may spot red squirrels, deer, ravens and buzzards. Keep your eyes open for the Labyrinth! The Queen's Way is a spectacular drive covering around nineteen glorious miles and skirting Clatteringshaws Loch and an excellent visitor centre. The Galloway Red Deer Range, where you can get close up to the deer, the wild goat park and the Bruce's Stone marking the spot where Robert the Bruce rested after the battle of Rapploch Moss. From the Queen's Way there are numerous forest trails, picnic areas and a lovely waterfall. Discover the Art in the forest such as the 'Eye' and 'Quorum' a group of stone heads carved and set into the walls of an old sheep stell.
