Sidmouth's shingly bay is surrounded by dramatic red cliffs whilst the town itself offers a variety of charming old buildings, affectionately earning the title of "Regency Town by the Sea." In fact the town boasts in the region of 500 listed buildings. For something a little different then visitors are invited to the Norman Lockyer Observatory, perched on top of Salcombe Hill. Open to the public at least twice a month, there are a variety of events organised by the enthusiastic volunteers.
