| Its beginnings can be traced back to the Neolithic period, where evidence of a thriving community can still be seen on the slopes of Ord Hill. There is a popular path winding up the hill, passing burial cairns, hut circles, burnt mounds, ancient banks, field clearance heaps and other fascinating features from the past. The short trail is well worth the climb to enjoy the magnificent view of the stunning scenery. The region is served by a number of other fascinating attractions, such as the North West Highlands Geo Park and the world-famous Glenmorangie Distillery. For those interested in the culture and history of the region, there is an abundance of heritage sites to visit, such as the nearby Brora Heritage Centre. |

Enjoy the peace and quiet, watch the birds and other wildlife and take in the spectacular scenery of this remote and beautiful area north west of Lochinver and the Inverpolly Nature Reserve. | Talmine is a small hamlet, one of several in this peaceful fishing and crofting community which look north east across the picturesque Tongue Bay. This traditional stone croft house is in a beautiful situation on the clifftops and has the best views in the village to the Rabbit Isles and along the North Coast. Visitors come here to enjoy the peace and quiet as well as the warm welcome from the friendly locals. Talmine village has a beautiful sandy beach with a harbour and jetty - the rocky outcrop that forms part of the harbour is studded with black and ruby garnets. Shops and hotels can be found in the pretty village of Tongue only three miles away. Boat excursions to the Rabbit Islands are popular for good diving and for picnics on the beautiful sheltered beach there. This is an ideal base for touring along both the North and West coasts. From Scourie you can explore south past Quinag to Lochinver, or north to Kinlochbervie, a major fishing port. | Situated in the heart of the Sutherland hills, amidst spectacular scenery, Doulay Cottage is a traditional detached keepers or stalkers cottage. It has recently been sympathetically restored by its current owner and now offers warm and welcoming accommodation in an extremely quiet location on a no-through road that leads onto hills, mountains and lochs, yet is easily accessible. The cottage has a cosy, welcoming lounge / dining room leading through to the kitchen area. There is a single bedroom downstairs, together with good-sized family bathroom. Upstairs the cottage has recently been attractively restored with traditional tongue and groove wood-lined walls. There are two good-sized bedrooms and pretty landing area and all rooms enjoy stunning, uninterrupted views across the spectacular Sutherland hills. The nearby town of Lairg is situated on the side of Loch Shin. It offers a good selection of small shops, restaurants, pub and café. There is also a fascinating visitors centre and lovely walks by the side of the loch. The local area is home to an incredible array of wildlife, such as deer, otter and pine martins as well as a vast array of birds, including visiting osprey, golden eagles and buzzards. The area is also renowned for its outdoor pursuits. Spectacular mountain bike trails offer easy routes for beginners as well as extremely challenging ones for experienced riders and all will appreciate the amazing views from the top. There is free fishing available to guests of Doulay Cottage on Little Loch Shin and main Loch Shin has fishing available by permit ticket, which can be obtained locally. Non-anglers will also be enchanted by a visit to the Falls of Shin. Just 15 minutes drive away; it is one of the few places to watch wild salmon close at hand as they leap up the dramatic falls. Golf, sailing, canoeing, riding, climbing, hill and forest walking are all available in the region. Doulay Cottage is ideally located for exploring the whole of the region. Heading across to the west coast, breathtaking mountains are interspersed with lochs and rivers before reaching the crystal clear waters and the white shell sand bays of the Atlantic sea. Travel further north to explore the wild, rugged seascapes of Caithness. From here a day trip to the Orkney Isles is a must. To the south lies Inverness, the Capital city of the Highlands, which is within an hours drive away.Property has electric storage heaters. |

| The Loch is fed by the River Shin, renowned for its beauty and the abundance of salmon and trout that it plays host to. A walk along the Shin will take you to the famous Falls and, at certain times of year, you can see salmon leaping to their original spawning grounds. The Falls of Shin are also served by restaurants and shops. To the west you will find Loch Assynt, where you will find the ancient ruins of Ardvreck Castle. In the distance, surrounding Lairg, you can take in the breathtaking panorama that is made up of blue mountains and rolling forests. The area is famed for its wildlife and animals such as red deer can be seen throughout the year. For the more energetically-minded, there are golf-courses and many walking and mountaineering trails. |
