| In the picturesque village of Fort Augustus, this listed end-terraced former estate cottage is quietly situated away from the main road yet within 5 minutes walking distance of shops, pubs and restaurants. The cottage has been sympathetically renovated retaining the gable windows and original fireplaces to keep the traditional character. Well-maintained, the cottage is warm and welcoming with a homely atmosphere. There is a lovely garden to the front with garden chairs and small portable barbecue. Fort Augustus is half way between Fort William and Inverness (approx. 45 mins drive), an excellent central base for exploring all the Highlands have to offer. The wide choice of recreational amenities for all the family includes pleasure excursions on Loch Ness, cycle hire, golf, sailing and fishing. Mountain bike and forest trails are nearby with the Great Glen Cycle route running through the village and for hill walkers there are at least 50 Munros within an hour's drive. 1 double and 1 twin bedroom, sitting room (with a single z-bed for a child or young teenager), dining room/lounge, kitchen, utility room, bathroom, shower-room. All electric with night storage and convector heaters plus multi-fuel stove in lounge/dining room. | Number 8 Old School is a luxurious apartment occupying part of the historic St Benedicts Abbey. Situated in 20 acres of landscaped garden grounds right on the southern shores of Loch Ness, this really is the most exquisite location imaginable. The abbey was built on the original site of the fort that gives Fort Augustus its name. For many years a Benedictine monastery and school, these wonderful and historic buildings, with cloistered walks, stained glass windows and thick stone walls have been superbly converted into high quality living accommodation. Number 8 Old School is situated on the first floor of the old bell-tower and enjoys wonderful views across the landscaped grounds to the mountains beyond. The spacious open plan lounge, dining room and kitchen is beautifully presented with deep leather sofas, large dining table and exceptionally well-equipped kitchen with built-in appliances. The large en-suite bedroom, second good-sized twin bedroom and family bathroom are all immaculately presented. The facilities in the grounds are a real feature of this property including a tennis court, croquet lawn, badminton, cricket pitch, moorings for visitors' boats on the lock, purpose built barbeque and even a giant chess set in the charming cloistered gardens. There is also a full-sized snooker table in the club lounge, formerly the monks' refectory a superb wood-panelled room with stained glass windows. Children will enjoy the adventure playground and there is an excellent restaurant in the old Boat House in the Abbey grounds. Fort Augustus is a charming village. Its focal point is a dramatic and picturesque series of locks which provide access to boats from the Caledonian Canal to and from Loch Ness. The wide tow paths and pretty lawned areas along the side of the canal provide an ideal vantage point from which to sit and watch the numerous small crafts navigating the lock gates. There is a variety of good cafes and restaurants here, as well as an interesting and unusual selection of small shops. Fort Augustus is situated half way along the Great Glen Way, which runs from Fort William to Inverness along the side of the canal to provide superb cycling and scenic walking along its 73 mile path. The river Oich also runs close by; both are just a short walk from the Abbey. There is an excellent 9-hole golf course which is open to visitors. Mountain biking is very popular in the area and the recently opened Laggan Wolf Tracks provide some wonderful and stretching downhill runs for all abilities. Boat excursions on Loch Ness run from the village. Visitors wishing to learn more about the loch and its elusive monster, Nessie, should head for Drumnadrochit, about 20 miles north on the shores of the loch. This pretty village has two excellent museums offering scientific studies on the various sightings, with photographic illustrations. Just outside the village is the stunningly beautiful Urquhart Castle, which sits on a promontory overlooking Loch Ness. Heading west, the wild beauty of Glen Affic, one of the most beautiful and scenic Highland glens, has wonderful walks, with waterfalls, old Caledonian forests and amazing flora and fauna. Horse riding and pony-trekking in the surrounding hills is regularly enjoyed and ski-ing is available on The Nevis Range near Fort William, approx 30 miles away or in the Cairngorms near Aviemore, just over an hour's drive from Fort Augustus. Whether you enjoy outdoor pursuits, historical trails, exploring attractive villages or just taking in the spectacular scenery, there is something for everyone in this superb area of the Western Highlands.The property is all on one level on the first floor, has gas LPG central heating. |

It has a good collection of small shops, lots of delicious places to eat, ample of pleasant pubs and wide-open views of Loch Ness itself. Other points of interest include the Caledonian Canal which passes right by the village and there's also the Clansman Centre to look round. Top tourist spots like Fort William, Kingussie, Newtonmore and Inverness are all a quick drive away. Activities available close by include cycling, walking, golf and fishing so there's something for all the family. |
