| Cressfield Lodge and Cressfield Villa are ideally placed in this lovely corner of Dumfriesshire known as Annandale. The village of Ecclefechan is surprisingly accessible to just about anywhere whatever the direction. The romantic village of Gretna Green is only a short drive and so why not get married there, have the wedding reception at the Cressfield Country House Hotel and honeymoon at the Lodge or Villa! All you will have to worry about is which fabulous place to visit each day! This whole area is like a miniature Scotland with challenging hill walking, the UKs largest forest park, an abundance of wildlife, romantic castles and ancient history, the stunning sandy beaches, some of the best mountain biking to be had in the world and all wrapped up in the warmth of the Gulf Stream making this a very temperate climate. The recently opened Annandale Way is a long distance footpath covering the 55 miles between the dramatic Devils Beef Tub at Moffat and ending at the coast at Newbie Barns near Annan. Visitors will enjoy a trip to the stunning estate of Drumlanrig Castle, home to the Duke of Buccleuch. Why not try your luck at gold panning at Wanlockhead, Scotlands highest village. Ecclefechans enduring claim to fame is as the birthplace of Thomas Carlyle the famous essayist and historian. The village lies in the valley of the Mein Water which is a tributary of the River Annan. For golfers the nearby 9-hole course at Hoddom is a par 33 and Southerness has a championship course. Dalton Pottery makes for an interesting trip out where you can decorate your own pot and sample delicious home baking with a fresh coffee in the Art Café. The Galloway Forest has just been awarded as one of only four places in the world to view the stars at their best! |
