Golf Cottage is situated in the historic small town of Dornoch on the edge of the Dornoch Firth. Built of mellow sandstone this charming cottage has been sympathetically and lovingly restored and refurbished by its present owners, whilst retaining many of its attractive original features, including stripped pine doors, original fireplace and exposed wood staircase. Dornoch is one of the prettiest towns in the Highlands. Its 13th Century Cathedral, with beautiful stained glass windows, serves as a spectacular focal point. Just off the ancient town square can be found the Old Town Jail, which is now an upmarket clothes store and gift shop, the Bishop's Palace and old court house. Once the spiritual Capital of Sutherland, Dornoch is now a thriving small town with excellent facilities, including unusual and interesting shops, good restaurants and bars. The town is famed at the turn of the year for its much loved New Year Street Party. There is a variety of entertainment on offer, including fireworks, all undertaken in a lovely family atmosphere. Sandstone cottages and town houses line its peaceful streets and winding lanes. Known as Royal Dornoch due to its status as a Royal Burgh, the town is renowned for its championship golf course, its award winning stretch of wide sandy beach and its mussels, which are harvested and exported world wide. The region is designated a National Scenic Area, with miles of unspoilt coastline, incredible wildlife and fascinating historical sites. Andrew Carnegie, the famous Victorian philanthropist who bought nearby Skibo Castle stated: "If there is a heaven on earth it is here".
