mile of quiet country roads which will lead you to any number of secluded sandy beaches or to a countryside pub to sample some of the great local food. Many of the local towns have achieved a personality of their own through their achievements. Castle Douglas is known as the Food Town with over 50 businesses involved in producing and selling local food. Kirkcudbright with its pretty little harbour and brightly painted houses, which nestle along the historic High Street is known as the Artists Town. Wigtown is Scotlands Book Town and for book lovers everywhere it is a wonderful place to browse for hours. Dumfries and Galloway is home to some splendid public gardens and the renowned garden at Threave is no exception. For a castle with a difference let the custodian row you across the moat! There is space and solitude in abundance here and the hill-walking is superb and surprisingly devoid of people and so you can have the summits to yourself! A rare treat! For wildlife the area is unbeatable whether for seeing the wildlife within their natural habitat or visiting Kirkcudbrights Wildlife Conservation Park or the red deer range on the Queens Way, where you can watch the deer being fed. We have over two hundred miles of stunning coastline and where better to cook freshly caught fish than a barbeque on a sandy beach. The nearby Loch Ken is not just a paradise for fishermen but also offers a sailing centre which is ideal for all the family and the magnificent Drumlanrig Castle is a must. This former Douglas stronghold and now the home of the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch is set in 90,000 acres of spectacular grounds.

Because of its remoteness the Galloway Forest Park has been awarded the status of being one of only four Dark Sky Parks in the western world and so nowhere else in Europe can you stand in awe and amazement and see shooting stars and the Milky Way. There are over 200 miles of coastline from rugged cliff tops to sandy beaches often empty of all but a few oyster catchers. If you are lucky you may spot dolphins, minke whales and otters. As you can imagine from an area largely surrounded by the sea we have a good selection of seafood on offer. The public gardens here are a testament to our climate and never more in evidence than at Logan Botanic Gardens where plants from the South Seas flourish thanks to our coast being kissed by the Gulf Stream. The lovely little harbour town of Kirkcudbright is known as the Artists Town and when you visit the historic High Street with its brightly painted houses and secret pends and wynds it is easy to see why. The town has long associations as a colony for artists and is often compared with St Ives and Newlyn. At whatever time of the year you choose to visit there is generally something going on from the highly acclaimed Spring Fling, colourful jazz festivals, the Kirkcudbright Tattoo, the Country and Western Music Festival to the Wickerman Festival. Not forgetting the various events at Wigtown, Scotlands National Book Town and Castle Douglas, the designated Food Town.

Pieces of 8 is a charming mid terraced cottage set in the pretty little village of Palnackie in the heart of Galloway. The accommodation is spread over three floors and is immaculately presented throughout with a cosy open fire in the lounge making this cottage a suitable choice regardless of the season. The name of the cottage is apposite as this area was notorious for its smuggling connections. Never more so than at nearby Balcary where the hotel was riddled with holes for secreting the contraband. Walter Scott wrote of the area that Few people take more enthusiastically to the 'free-trade' than the men of the Solway Coast Take assurance that your Welcome Pack will be quite legal! The property has electric storage heaters.

Castle Douglas is known as the Food Town with around fifty local businesses either producing or selling high quality local produce for all to enjoy.
