| Woodburn Lodge is a spacious two storey house in its own extensive gardens and grounds. Situated in an elevated position in the small hamlet of Altass in the Sutherland Hills, it enjoys commanding views across Strath Oykel. The view from the main bedroom must arguably be one of the most perfect views in this exquisite area of the North West Highlands. A tumbling burn, two large ponds and gently sloping open fields all add to the charm of this bright, modern property. All the rooms are meticulously presented. The large lounge has deep leather sofas and chairs set round the welcoming York- stone fireplace, with wood burning stove. A large kitchen with dining room overlooks the surrounding gardens. All the bedrooms are bright and attractive, with coordinated soft furnishings and the second lounge makes an ideal quiet room, with a selection of books , games, second TV and DVD. This is an ideal family house that is adaptable for all ages. In this truly spectacular area of Sutherland there is breathtaking scenery around every bend. Driving West from the property, following the route of the famous Oykel salmon river, the road goes through some of the most dramatic and geologically important scenery in Scotland. Breathtaking mountains are interspersed with lochs and rivers before reaching the crystal clear waters and the white shell sand bays of the Atlantic coastline. The Falls of Shin, just a short drive away, is one of the few places in Scotland where you can see wild salmon leaping up the falls close to hand. There are a number of excellent golf courses in the area, including the renowned Championship golf course at Dornoch. Fishing, mountain biking, hill walking, climbing, sailing and canoeing are all enjoyed locally. The area is also renowned for its wildlife. Deer are regularly seen from the kitchen window and pine martins are frequent visitors (particularly if you leave a tasty morsel by the window and watch for their arrival!) There are a wide variety of places to visit in the area. The fairytale castle of Dunrobin, seat of the Dukes of Sutherland, with its magnificent gardens modelled on Versailles makes an excellent day out. A trip to Handa Island, with its colony of sea birds, including puffins, is a wonderful trip for those interested in bird life. Travel further north to explore the wild, rugged seascapes of Caithness. From here a day trip to the Orkney Isles is a must. To the south lies Inverness, the Capital city of the HIghlands, which is just under an hour's drive away. The nearby village of Banar Bridge has excellent local facilities, including a bakery, butcher, village store, cafe, pubs and a bistro serving freshly cooked dishes using locally sourced produce, as well as its own 9 hole golf course.Property has oil central heating. |
