The Dovecote is a superb conversion of a lovely old stone barn set in open countryside yet easily accessible for exploring the whole of the Highlands. The original dovecote on the gable end has been retained, which contributes to its unique and distinctive charm. It is situated on a quiet lane in the Ross-shire countryside with the magnificent peaks of Ben Wyvis beyond. The accommodation is all on one floor with a very attractive hallway running the length of the property, linking the rooms together. It is beautifully presented to a high standard throughout. The large lounge has windows on all sides. All the bedrooms are of generous proportions and the 'double bunk' bedroom with a second TV with video and DVD facility, making it an ideal room for children with games and family movies provided. There is a large farmhouse style kitchen/dining room and superb modern bathroom. Fully enclosed gardens surround the property, a secluded patio area with picnic table. The varied and unspoilt county of Ross-shire stretches from east to west across the heart of the Highlands and encompasses miles of unspoilt beaches, quaint fishing villages and bustling sea ports. This area is renowned for its wealth of activities, many of them right on the doorstep. Permits for trout and salmon fishing are available locally. Hill walking, mountain biking, riding, sailing, canoeing and golf are all enjoyed locally. There is a selection of excellent restaurants and bars in the nearby towns and villages and Inverness, the capital of the Highlands is just 20 minutes drive away. This vibrant, bustling city has superb leisure facilities including a multi million pound theatre complex, an ice rink, twelve screen cinema and a swimming 'aquadome'. There are a wide variety of restaurants, cafes and bars, set against the backdrop of the imposing Inverness castle that looks down on river Ness. From here visitors can take a trip by boat on Loch Ness to visit the atmospheric battlefields of Culloden, the fairy tale castle of Cawdor and historic Fort George. The peninsula known as the Black Isle, due to the richness of its soil, is only a short drive away. Surrounded by the waters of the Cromarty Firth this is an ideal place to encounter the most northerly colony of Bottle nosed dolphins that are regularly seen in the area. There is a highly recommended boat trip that runs from Cromarty harbour to view the dolphins and seals that frequent these waters close to hand (you can even' adopt a dolphin, which all have their own distinct markings, so you visit your dolphin again on your next trip!). Cromarty also has a fascinating court house museum and an excellent selection of restaurants, pubs, cafes and unusual small shops. The other pretty coastal towns and fishing villages dotted around the Black Isle and Ross-shire are truly charming and well worth exploring. There are some superb walks direct from The Dovecote. With hills, mountains, quiet lanes and forest walks there is something for all ages and abilities. Situated in elevated position overlooking the picturesque Poolewe bay, The Cottage enjoys magnificent seascape views from its large picture windows. All rooms are bright, spacious and beautifully presented and with three good sized bedrooms, and large lounge and kitchen/dining room it offers generous accommodation for four. The beautifully landscaped garden grounds are a real treat. Enclosed by mature hedging the gardens are laid out with lawns, shrubs and flower borders. The main garden enjoys superb sea and mountain views and there is also a secluded, additional garden area (steep steps down to this area; toddlers beware!). This area of West Coast Highlands is renowned for its wonderful beaches and breathtaking scenery. Wildlife abounds and otters, seals, whales and a myriad of bird life can be seen locally; it is a real bird watcher's paradise. Noted for its temperate climate and warmed by the waters of the Gulf Stream, an exceptional variety of plants flourish here. The sub tropical gardens of Inverewe situated here are simply stunning and offer visitors a memorable day out. The pretty village of Poolewe has excellent local amenities, all within easy walking distance, including restaurants, cafe, shop and pub, and even a swimming pool. The surrounding area offers a wealth of activities and places of interest. There is a superb 18 hole golf course, pony trekking, cycling, (bike hire available locally), fishing in loch, sea and river, as well as the opportunity for hill walking and climbing in some of the most spectacular mountain scenery to be found anywhere in the Highlands. Close by is the Ben Eighe nature reserve in the heart of the spectacular Torridon mountains. It has walks and climbs for all abilities as well as some lovely picnic areas. Along the coast there are a variety of water sports and boat trips. The nearby village of Gairloch also has superb beaches, interesting small shops, cafes and restaurants as well as whale watching boat excursions that run from the harbour. Traum is a lovely single-storey detached cottage set in 6 acres of grounds leading down to the beautiful River Glass or Allt Graad. Traum is the Gaelic word for deep, as in sleep, and this aptly describes the seclusion and tranquillity of its setting, which offers complete privacy whilst being easily accessible. The cottage has been in the same family for over seventy years and in that time it has been extended and refurbished to provide bright and spacious accommodation, whilst retaining its traditional charm and ambience. The large sitting room cum library is a feature of the house. The owners have supplied a wide range of books and the lovely paintings on the walls are mainly originals by local Highland artists. Extensive private natural grounds surround the house. Spring flowers, azaleas, maple and other mature trees, with grassed areas, all add to its charm. A steep slope, with paths, lead down to parkland by the tumbling River Glass below. Views of Fyrish monument, the Cromarty Firth and the mountains complete the picture. The area is a haven for wild life; pine martin, deer, eagles and a variety of other birds can often be seen. The Cromarty Firth is renowned for its large population of seals which bask along the shore line and the nearby Moray Firth is home to the famous bottle nosed dolphins that are regularly spotted in the area. Traum is situated in the heart of clan Munro country. It is in Glen Glass, at the top of which sits Loch Glass with its back drop of the awe inspiring Wyvis mountain range (the summit of Ben Wyvis stands at over 3,400 feet).The surrounding area is a hill walker's and an outdoor enthusiast's paradise. Alder Cottage is a lovely single storey cottage set in its own private garden grounds amidst stunning scenery just 5 miles from the Isle of Skye. Once a traditional croft cottage the property has undergone a complete transformation and extension and now offers bright and spacious accommodation in a spectacular Highland setting. The large picture windows drink in the amazing views of hills and mountains. The spacious lounge has a feature open fireplace made from local Applecross stone that acts a focal point. A good sized kitchen / dining room in the new extension looks out across the lovely gardens that surround the property . The surrounding area offers a wealth of activities, places of interest and historic sites. The fairy tale castle of Eilean Donan, enchantingly situated on a promontory in the loch and accessed by a small causeway, is right on the doorstep. A spectacular route takes you past this famous castle and through the amazing mountain range known as the Five Sisters of Kintail and beautiful Glen Shiel, before reaching the shores of Loch Ness. The charming sea port of Kyle of Lochalsh, gateway to the Isle of Skye, is just 5 miles away. A glass-bottomed boat runs from here to view the sea life close to hand. The Gavin Maxwell Otter Centre at Kyleakin is well worth a visit and numerous distilleries and ancient historical sites are all within easy reach. Harvest Cottage is a quintessential village cottage. Built of sandstone, with whitewashed walls and deep silled windows, it sits on the edge of the village green in the pretty hamlet of Fearn in the beautiful county of Ross-Shire. The cottage has been lovingly and painstakingly restored by its owners. The accommodation on the ground floor is all open plan. A bright, modern kitchen/ dining area leads through to a lovely lounge, dominated by a beautiful fireplace constructed from the original sandstone, with multi fuel stove creating a superb focal point French doors open out to the front which leads directly onto the pretty village green with traditional village pub on the far side. The solid wood staircase leads up to bright and airy modern bedrooms. From the landing there are amazing views across the open countryside to the Moray Firth beyond. The small hamlet of Fearn is situated just 10 minutes from some of the most stunning beaches in the Highlands. Nearby Shandwick bay is renowned for its beautiful golden sands and safe shallow bathing. The pretty fishing village of Portmahomack also has a lovely beach as well as a pub, cafe and a renowned fish restaurant. The owner of Harvest Cottage is a fisherman and would be delighted to take visitors on fishing excursions in his boat. Mackerel, halibut, skate and cod are all caught locally and fresh crab and lobster can also be obtained. This area is also close to the Moray Firth, famous for its resident Bottle nosed dolphins that are regularly seen and boat excursions to view the dolphins, seals and vast array of seabirds close to hand are available nearby. The pretty coastal towns and fishing villages dotted around this part of the coast are particularly charming, with small harbours, quaint cottages and unspoilt coastline. There is also a small ferry that runs across the Cromarty Firth from Nigg from June to October. Royal Dornoch is also famous for its championship golf course and award winning beach, with miles of golden sand. Just a few miles further north is Dunrobin Castle, seat of the Dukes of Sutherland. An Talla is a charming seaside cottage situated in the picturesque fishing village of Rockfield. Originally the village gospel hall, from which it takes its Gaelic name, An Talla has been sympathetically and attractively converted and refurbished to provide a high standard of accommodation in a superb location. It is situated right on the waters edge, with gardens leading directly on the sand and shingle beach. With dolphins, porpoises and a wide variety of seabirds spotted directly from the cottage windows it is truly the quintessential seaside holiday cottage. Most of the accommodation is on the ground floor. A bright and spacious lounge opens onto a conservatory-style dining area. The whole room is dominated by the amazing seascapes and lovely mountain scenery beyond. A partially glassed door leads out to a decking area, ideal for alfresco dining and enjoying a glass or a dram as you drink in the incredible views. The pretty fishing village of Rockfield owes its existence to the sea.
