| Weavers Cottage , Kilvaxter |
Price: £ 308 - £ 475
Sleeps: 4 |

This traditional cottage, which was once the home of the last weaver to work in this part of Skye, faces the Trotternish hills and from the grounds there are glorious views to the Outer Hebrides. Inside, the cottage has a cosy and homely character. There is a large kitchen with a dining table to swap holiday stories around and the sitting room has an open fire. Attached to the owners’ croft house but remaining private, it makes a comfortable base from which to explore this remote part of the ‘Misty Isle’. Walks are possible straight from the front door, go through the nearest gate and head for the hills. Visitors have spotted whales, seals, otters, basking sharks, dolphins and eagles, all within a few miles of the cottage and in the winter months a few lucky guests may be treated to a spectacular display of the Northern Lights. Weaver’s Cottage is just north of Uig which has a shop, a petrol station and a couple of good pubs and restaurants. It is the ferry port to the Outer Hebrides and you can arrange a day trip to these remote islands. Close by is the Museum of Island life, an educational visit with traditional stone and thatch cottages filled with pictures and artefacts. There are two castles nearby. One – Duntulm is three miles north of the cottage. It’s next to the Duntulm pub, so it is best to combine a trip here with a lunchtime meal. The ‘castle’ consists of a small ruin, which is not very impressive. But it’s free, and the views are lovely. At Waternish there’s Dunvegan Castle. This is a real castle, still lived in, and seat of the Macleod clan. It has Claymores, oil paintings, four poster beds, and the famous Fairy Flag. Portree is about half an hour away. This is where you can shop for your food supplies or local crafts and don’t forget to try the fish and chips down by the harbour. This breathtaking area is ideal for walking, wildlife spotting or just watching the sun go down. Every lay-by to and from this part of the world offers a postcard view to take your breath away. If you can tear yourself away from the island, The Isle of Skye bridge opens up the whole of the mainland to explore or you can still travel by ferry to Glenelg where the well preserved Brochs, iron age dwellings, can be found. The Capital of the Highlands, Inverness, is an easy day trip away. |

Nothing we write can quite prepare you for the experience that is Scalpay. As you approach the island by private boat a feeling of tranquillity and peace starts to envelope you and a stillness starts to sooth away the effects of a hectic life. Everybody, from couples wanting a romantic get away experience to families who would like the safety and quality of the holiday this island offers, all will enjoy this unique place. If you are lucky dolphins will greet you as you journey across the water and you will catch your first glimpse of your holiday home, The Garden Cottage. This privately owned island is situated in the stretch of water between the Isle of Skye and the Applecross Peninsula on the west coast of Scotland with magnificent views over to Skye, Raasay and the mainland. There are no roads on the island and with some 200 acres of mixed and coniferous woodland, many freshwater lochs and burns to fish, open hills rise from the sea to 1198 ft and more than 14 miles of shoreline mostly consisting of rock pools and pebbles with a small sandy beach at low and mid tides on the far side of the island, this tranquil location is the perfect place to experience wildlife and enjoy the natural beauty of the surroundings. With only 5 houses on the island with no vehicles (except 2 tractors, a quad bike and ancient Suzuki jeep to convey your luggage) peace and tranquillity is ensured. To quote the visitors book ‘the islands’ owners are both embracing but understated.’ Vegetables grown in the walled garden are seasonally available to purchase and extra touches like a vase of wild flowers to welcome you often found. Nick the boat man offers boat excursions and fishing tips if required. Most visitors don't leave the Isle of Scalpay during their stay and are happy to spend their holiday walking, bird-watching, swimming, enjoying picnics by the sea and generally relaxing in total peace and quiet. However the Isle of Skye is easily visited (pay boatman directly) and there are lots of things to do and see on the island - castles, music festivals, local arts and crafts, and climbing and walking in the Cuillins. You can arrange to be picked up by boat from Scalpay to go on a sealife adventure, and hopefully spot a whale or a school of dolphins. Skye has some internationally famous restaurants including Lady Claire Macdonald's Kinloch Lodge and the Three Chimneys. All this coupled with the high standard of the cottages with the obvious attention to detail that has been paid in preparing them for your visit makes this a very special holiday destination. In the gardens of Scalpay House this cottage overlooking the sea was refurbished in 2005 and is ideally suited for all activities. The large area of foreshore at the front of the cottage provides excellent birdwatching in the summer months when many varieties of migratory birds come to feed and nest on Scalpay. The views over Broadford Bay are magnificent and the wildlife and birds are amazing. This is a truly unique and fabulous holiday cottage on a perfect west coast island. |
