Wanlockhead nestles within the Lowther Hills and is Scotland's highest village at 1531 feet above sea level. The fascinating lead-mining museum is across from the cottage and is a 4 star visitor attraction with a coffee shop. The village also has a pub/restaurant. The surrounding countryside is spectacular for walking and the Southern Upland Way passes nearby. Numerous recreational activities in the area include golf, fishing, pony trekking, cycling and even gold-panning! Easy day excursions can be enjoyed to Dumfries and Moffat or to Glasgow or Edinburgh (both an hour's drive). Bikes can be hired at Drumlanrig and tuition is available. There is loch fishing just 1 mile from the cottage and salmon fishing in the Nith.
