Situated in the valley of Strathmore and regarded as the gateway to the Angus Glens, Kirriemuir is a lovely red sandstone town amidst some of Scotland's most unspoiled landscapes. This stunning settlement was the birthplace of the renowned novelist JM Barrie, best known for his children's character Peter Pan who was recently the subject of the film ‘Finding Neverland’. His house is now a museum looked after by the National Trust for Scotland and a statue of ’the boy who never grew up’ can be found in the town itself. Another literary landmark is close by in the form of Glamis castle, Shakespeare’s setting for his unluckiest of plays, Macbeth. Kirriemuir also hosts an Aviation Museum and the historic Pictish Stones at Meigle as well as hill-walking in the Angus Glens.

This lovely cottage is one of two 17th Century stone-built cottages in the scattered hamlet of East Murthill. The cottage also comes with access to the owner’s indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi and sauna. There is also a large garden with incredible views and a patio area from which to enjoy them. For the long summer evenings the barbecue offers a great excuse to eat in, although the town of Kirriemuir (just seven miles away) is full of local amenities such as restaurants, pubs and cafes.

Made of lovely red sandstone, the Strathmore valley town of Kirriemuir is often regarded as the gateway to the Angus Glens, some of Scotland's most unspoiled landscapes. JM Barrie - creator of the much-loved children's character, Peter Pan, and subject of the Johnny Depp film ‘Finding Neverland’, was born in the town and his house is now a museum looked after by the National Trust for Scotland. A statue of ‘the boy who never grew up’ can be found within Kirriemuir. However, Barrie is not the only literary connection to this charming little town. Nearby Glamis castle was the setting for Shakespeare’s ‘cursed’ play, Macbeth. The historic Pictish Stones at Meigle and the Angus Glens are well worth visiting and offer spectacular views whilst hill walking.

Be sure and make a trip to Arbroath to sample the famous Arbroath Smokie, a wood-smoked haddock, which is produced in a small family smokehouse and is a real delicacy. The area boasts some fine beaches, including Montrose beach which is a blue flag beach, 50 miles of unspoilt Angus coastline and dramatic red sandstone cliffs. Lunan Bay, recently voted as one of the best beaches in Scotland is well worth a visit. The Montrose basin nature reserve is just 18 miles away. Set on the edge of a tidal estuary, the basin attracts over 50,000 migratory birds each year. You can watch the busy life of these birds from the comfort of the visitor centre, which has a panoramic view of the basin. Neighbouring Edzell and Kirriemuir are the gateway to the magnificent Angus glens, the foothills of the mighty Cairngorm Mountains, a haven for wildlife and a peaceful refuge from modern life. The glens and surrounding countryside offer numerous walks for all abilities, including 14 of Scotlands munros - mountains over 3,000ft.
