| Because of its remoteness the Galloway Forest Park has been awarded the status of being one of only four Dark Sky Parks in the western world and so nowhere else in Europe can you stand in awe and amazement and see shooting stars and the Milky Way. There are over 200 miles of coastline from rugged cliff tops to sandy beaches often empty of all but a few oyster catchers. If you are lucky you may spot dolphins, minke whales and otters. As you can imagine from an area largely surrounded by the sea we have a good selection of seafood on offer. The public gardens here are a testament to our climate and never more in evidence than at Logan Botanic Gardens where plants from the South Seas flourish thanks to our coast being kissed by the Gulf Stream. The lovely little harbour town of Kirkcudbright is known as the Artists Town and when you visit the historic High Street with its brightly painted houses and secret pends and wynds it is easy to see why. The town has long associations as a colony for artists and is often compared with St Ives and Newlyn. At whatever time of the year you choose to visit there is generally something going on from the highly acclaimed Spring Fling, colourful jazz festivals, the Kirkcudbright Tattoo, the Country and Western Music Festival to the Wickerman Festival. Not forgetting the various events at Wigtown, Scotlands National Book Town and Castle Douglas, the designated Food Town. |
