Extra Details
Horn Head cliffs rise straight out of the water to a height of about 600ft/180m on the ocean side of the peninsula. They are an internationally important colony for breeding seabirds. It is designated as an Irish Natural Heritage Area and as a Refuge for Fauna specifically sea birds. Horn Head cliffs are also designated a Special Protection Area and a Special Area of Conservation by the Irish government.
This is probably the most dramatic of the beautiful Donegal peninsulas. Nature has painted the landscape with broad, bold strokes and the sculptured rocks and cliff faces are awesome in their majesty. You get a real sense of the power of the sea and the resilience of the land on this wild peninsula.
There are two splendid viewpoints, one on the north side where the cliffs dominate the scenery, and the other on the south side overlooking Dunfanaghy with the backdrop of Muckish and the Derryveagh mountains.
Before you cross the first cattle grid where the drive swings east, a narrow road ahead will bring you to a tower where you can enjoy the wild beauty all around you and even spot the houses on Tory Island to the west. Take your car a short distance on this road, park in the lay-by provided and walk the well-used trail to the tower.
Return to the junction to continue your drive where you emerge again in Dunfanaghy. Turn right in Dunfanaghy. As you head out of the village, the Famine Centre, right, is being developed as a museum and will chronicle the local effects of the terrible famine, which wrecked havoc in Ireland between 1845 and 1847. This famine and subsequent emigrations reduced the population of the country from eight million people to under four million, at which point it stands today. The famine alone killed over one million people and forced another million to leave the country. Beside the Famine Centre is a very good craft centre and art gallery.
