Belmullet is a pleasant town on the narrow neck of land between Broad Haven and Blacksod Bays, at the entrance to the Mullet peninsula. Local landlord, William Carter, founded it around 1825 and it quickly developed into the principal town in the barony of Erris. It is becoming a popular tourist location. Carne Golf Links lie in magnificent unspoiled sand dunes overlooking Blacksod Bay, Achill Island and the wild Atlantic Ocean near Belmullet, Co. Mayo. It was the last links course to be designed by the late Eddie Hackett and it is now believed by many who have played it to be his greatest challenge. Belmullet, in the centre of the Barony of Erris and lying between the two bays of Broadhaven to the north, and Blacksod to the south, is an ideal place for a sea angling holiday. Shore fishing is particularly good all round the area, on the Atlantic coast and inner coastline of Blacksod and Broadhaven Bay. There are some recognised spots from which large catches have been taken, while there are many more inviting and interesting places which have not yet been fished. This is a real paradise for the family fisherman, with miles of accessible coastline from which to cast his lure. To add to this, the beaches are almost deserted, and the fisherman can fish in perfect peace while his family can be near to hand enjoying the freedom which the vastness of the area affords.
